The Western States Police and Fire Games (WSPFG) is a multi-sport Olympic-style athletic program, held annually, to promote physical and mental well-being among Law Enforcement and Fire Service men and women through Sports. The WSPFG is the current successor to the original "California Police Olympics" first organized in 1967. Over the years, they have evolved: first, to include California Firefighters in 2000, and now eligible Peace Officer and Fire Service personnel from 11 Western States. Annual athletic participation averages 5,000; however due to San Diego's reputation as a prime visitor destination, more than 7,000 athletes are expected to participate in 2006.
The San Diego Police Athletic Federation (SDPAF) will be the Host in June of 2006. SDPAF was incorporated in 1972 as a 501(c)4 mutual benefit non-profit corporation. It is comprised of sworn, active San Diego Police Officers and its mission is to promote physical fitness and camraderie among its members. The SDPAF has hosted the Games on five other occasions: 1967, 1972, 1980, 1983 and 1992.
In 1970 the California Police Athletic Federation (CPAF) was incorporated as a 501(c)3 non-profit corporation to guide, sanction and promote the mission of the Games. The Games are governed by a Board of Directors made up of active and retired Peace Officers and Firefighters. The Headquarters Office was established in San Diego in 1986. The creator of the original California Police Olympics was then San Diego Police Lt. Duke Nyhus. Having retired from the police department as a Deputy Chief in 1984, Duke Continues to guide the CPAF as Executive Director.
The potential success of each Games is determined by several factors. Among the most important are the desirability of the Host City and the quality of the sports' venues; thereby leading to higher competitor attendance. Competitors do pay sports fees, but these cover only about one-half of the costs associated with staging some 55-60 sports over the course of one week; therefore, the financial and in-kind support from the local business and civic community has been a cornerstone of every successful Games. In addition to knowing that it has helped a worthy cause, this same community has benefited enormously over the years in concrete financial terms. The Western States Police & Fire Games are expected to bring in between 8 and 10 million dollars in direct economic impact to the City and County of San Diego.
