The San Diego International Sports Council partnered with the San Diego Judo community & USA Judo to host the 2004 USA Judo Senior National Championships. This event was held April 29 - May 1, 2004 at the Jenny Craig Pavilion on the campus of the University of San Diego. More then 700 Senior, Master, and Kata competitors from all over the world came out to compete, including seven of the ten athletes who represented the United States in the sport of judo at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, Greece.
The Senior Nationals were highlighted by an Opening Ceremony commemorating the 40th anniversary of Judo's inception as an Olympic sport in 1964. On hand were the original five members of the 1964 United State Judo team, Colonel Paul Maruyama, James Bregman, Master Sergeant George Harris, Senator Ben Nighthorse Campbell, and Coach Yosh Uchida.
